I'm trying to imagine 50 years hence people who have NO idea of the source trying to figure out WTF that name is about. Assuming, of course, it hasn't been wiped off the face of the planet already.

50 years from now someone will be checking out obscure fungi for a thesis. It's 2 AM, they have pinned down about 3 new useful facts in as many days, and life is pain. Then suddenly they read "Spongiforma squarepantsii???!!" and things don't seem that bad anymore.
